During his arrest, Gen. Zúñiga stated that his coup attempt was staged in coordination with Pres. Arce to boost his popularity. Bolivia, never a dull moment.

Whether or not Gen. Zuniga’s failed coup, comical in brevity, was pure theater, it marks a serious escalation in Bolivia’s slide towards authoritarianism, testing the waters for dispensing intractable conflict in deliberative institutions with the “order” of naked force.
