Which county will be crowned citizen science champions? 🏆 Hampshire are currently in the lead with an impressive 2,316 counts submitted so far, but Devon are hot on their heels! Even the scores by getting out for the #BigButterflyCount 👉 …erflycount.butterfly-conservation.org

Our partners at Pesticide Action Network UK have uncovered that 354 tonnes of pesticides were sprayed in towns and cities in 2024. We are in a #ButterflyEmergency, with long-term declines that need us all to take action to reduce the use of harmful chemicals, councils included.

Only two reports of Brown Hairstreak around Ipswich this year. 2023 seemed a good year but fewer reports last year. Are we slowly losing what seemed a stable population first recorded in 2015? They appear to be spreading in other other counties. Photo by Roger Cope from 2022.

Time flies when you're counting butterflies! 🦋 Thank you to everyone who has taken part in the #BigButterflyCount so far, and for sending in your photos. 🙏 Didn't get around to it this week? Don't worry! You have until 10 August to do as many counts as you like.

This is an historic photo. Congratulations to William Brame (who took the photo) for realising this was a different white butterfly. Now confirmed by Chris van Swaay as a Southern Small White - the first seen in England. As it is a female let's hope it has been laying eggs.
