You know a team is full of confidence when they start showboating with a slender one goal lead. That would have been disastrous under several previous managers. But it's amazing how Carrick has installed belief into every player. Mainoo has slotted back into the team seamlessly.

Forget the four victories. That point was as good as any of them. The sign of a good team is making sure you don't lose on a bad day. Casemiro stood out tonight for me. The only player who tried to instil some urgency into a Utd team playing at a pedestrian pace.

England seems to produce an ill disciplined performance at least once in every six nations' tournament. They seem unable to produce when the pressure is on. Scotland was superb, by the way.

Summer Olympians get all the accolades and all of the limelight. The Hoys, Peaty's, and Redgrave's of this world. The winter athletes hardly get a second glance. But Matt Westons two gold medals may well have made winter Olympics in this country more acceptable.

Ahmed has given the selectors a huge headache with that performance. Dragging England back from the dead there. Salt's place has to be in jeopardy, given recent batting performances.

There are many advanced midfielders in this country that are top players. The likes of Rogers, Foden, Palmer, etc. But I wouldn't swap any of them for our own Fernandes. None of them can consistently influence a game week in, week out like him. Even when he doesn't hit his level.

Utd has had a brief insight of what to expect next season. And it's a worrying prospect. How can we improve the first eleven. Yet fill the bench with enough quality to play every 3 days. We won't have enough money to carry this burden into next season. Reality before expectation.

Probably one of the greatest six nations' competitions in history. Even though some of these nations were written off before a ball was kicked. France deserved it. Italy have finally proved that they can compete on a level playing field with the established big boys.

I can see the Utd heirarchy's decision of shaking hands with Casemiro at the end of the season because of being an expensive luxury. But replacing his experience and vital goals would probably equal his financial package. Giving him one more year would be worth the price imo.

If Luis Enrique shows Utd any interest. Then, he must be a priority. If not, surely Utd could offer Carrick a one year extended contract to prove himself further. A say in the transfer policy, too. I'd be surprised if he didn't except the challenge with a better squad next term.

A managers job is to pick the best available players to win a football match. Even more so, when trophies and honours are at stake. It is not his job to put sentiment before those goals. Playing stand in goalkeepers ahead of far superior keeper's. Is a dereliction of duty imo.

The most worrying thing about last night imo. Was not just the result. But how easily Carrick became tetchy when pulled up about Utd's performance. That was only a small sample of what he would face next season with an overload of fixtures. Media presentation is vital these days.

Carrick would make a damn good politician. He gives little away. And every question is greeted with a large spoonful of waffle. But I suppose every manager has his own style. Ole was upbeat. Mourinho was controversial. Ten Hag was delusional. Amorim was off the cuff.

Mainoo was superb. Heaven and Mazraoui magnificent. But without the inspiration of Fernandes, Utd would not have won that game. He leads by example. He has to be one of the best in Europe atm. And would not be out of place in any of the great Utd teams of the past.

David Walsh (@davidwalsh1956) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Maguire and Shaw used all their experience to guide the team through a difficult match last night. Mainoo was superb. Not only tackling, but carrying the ball forward endlessly. Casemiro's goals will be sorely missed. Carrick is getting the best out of the thin squad available.

Nemanja Vidic won 15 major trophies during his career at Utd. Rio Ferdinand 14 major trophies. Yet, John Stones will leave City on a free transfer this summer with 19 major medals in his back pocket. How many would he have if he hadn't struck oil at the right time. Lucky man.

Ashley Young won't be remembered as a Utd great in years to come. But if you're looking for a player that leaves nothing on the pitch when pulling on a football Jersey. Then he is right up there with the very best. Those two beauties against Arsenal will be his legacy.

Playing the ball around your own penalty area is futile. More often than not, the ball is eventually kicked upfield anyway. This performance was almost ruined by such stupidity. Because errors apart, Utd were in complete control. But we gained composure To get over the line.
