A thread on this particular copy of the Quran: This 15th century Timurid-era Quran is one of the only four Quran’s which exist today on Chinese wax paper. The relationship b/w the Timurids & the Mings is interesting, but is a story for another time.

What Luwian hieroglyphics looked like. Luwian was the main language spoken on the western coast of Anatolia in the Bronze Age, and was likely the language of Homeric Troy. This inscription was found in Hattuša, the Capital of the Hittites.

I’m an English professor at William & Mary & for the first writing assignment in all my classes, I tell students to give me their version & a version written by AI. I tell them not to indicate which is which & I grade them both & make a guess. it’s never been hard to tell.

In the late 1400s, a Latin humanist in Ottoman Constantinople wrote a poem to Sultan Bayezid II. It praises Muhammad as “divine and holy” and dreams of a single world empire under the Sultan. Here’s the story of one of the most unusual Renaissance poems you’ll ever read 🧵
