My favourite story of the year so far goes to three-year-old Macsen and his best mate Pat. Pat is 78 and lives next door and they met on either side of their garden fence during lockdown. Plus the pics are just lush Rob Browne bit.ly/2HT0nMx

The 1970s was a decade of serious anxiety about food supplies. Norman Tebbit, of all people, urged the government to consider rationing basic foodstuffs. That played a significant role in the decision to join the EEC, and raises some important questions today. [THREAD]

The UK variant may have evolved in just one person, infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus for an unusually long time. So what does this mean for the pandemic, and stopping future variants? A thread. wired.co.uk/article/chroni…

I wrote this about a frustrating situation facing many parents. Questions need to be asked. It’s finding the right people to answer them which has proved tricky: Why can’t we watch our children play football outdoors?

I wrote an article for the The Guardian on SARSCoV2 seasonality. It was a great pleasure to work with the commissioning editor Oscar Quine, who helped me make the piece more accessible without having to compromise on what I wanted to say. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

There's a consensus the Welsh Gov handled the pandemic incredibly well. But there're very serious questions for them to answer with many mistakes made. Despite this there will be no Welsh inquiry!? I wrote this about why Wales needs its own inquiry: walesonline.co.uk/news/politics/…

Exciting day today. I have won a couple of awards at the Regional Press Awards. The first was Data Journalist of the Year. Second was Scoop of the Year which I won jointly with my colleague David James for our investigation on Covid in care homes. holdthefrontpage.co.uk/2021/news/four…

Air pollution kills an estimated ten million people each year. But it does much more than that, too. A long thread on what it means that more than 90 percent of the world's population is breathing dangerously polluted air. (1/x) lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v43/…

I've translated a fascinating report by the very well-sourced Russian journalist Farida Rustamova about what senior Russian officials think of the invasion. Haven't seen this kind of information anywhere else. ilyalozovsky.substack.com/p/what-russian…

Read this story till the end. During WWII some children were making diaries from concentration camps & occupied cities by nazis. History is repeating. This is a diary of Katya, a 16 years old girl from Mariupol, whose mother died in the basement👇😢

The length of waits in the Welsh NHS are truly staggering. The Welsh Government has serious questions to answer. In Wales there are 60,000 waits of over 2 years for treatment. In England there are 200. This takes some unpacking but it has a horrible human cost. Thread:

This has barely dated, despite everything that’s happened since 1996. Brilliant from the late John Bird m.youtube.com/watch?v=f6a_we…
