The idea that tech companies have no control over how their products are used comes from the dated concept that tech is somehow neutral. It also doesn't jibe well with how the tech industry has spent millions restricting how their tech is used through licensing and digital locks

The amount of disrespect and straight-up gaslighting that @timnitGebru (@dair-community.social/bsky.social) is at the receiving end from our employer right now is chilling. Google could be one of the research leaders on the social implications of AI and tech. But they're choosing to go the other way.

Shocked to wake up to this extremely upsetting news. @timnitGebru (@dair-community.social/bsky.social)'s leadership + scholarship as well as kindness + generosity are unparalleled. I was thrilled to join Timnit's team and to work with and learn from her. Timnit is everything we need right now.

I read the AI research paper at the center of why Timnit Gebru no longer works at Google. It’s about the risks and consequences of deploying large language models. It’s written by Gebru, linguist Emily Bender, and others like Margaret Mitchell, Google’s other AI ethics co-lead

Jeff's fixation on the pub approval process is a red herring. Just the sentence that the process goes through many "social scientists and ethicists" is laughable. The process is brittle and is being used as an excuse to get rid of a strident DEI advocate and a vocal Black woman.

Don't paint me as an "angry Black woman" for whom you need "de-escalation strategies" for. This thread is just the beginning of the toxicity I dealt with since before I even joined Google and I haven't said anything specific yet. 1\ x.com/timnitGebru/st…

Full stop— We can’t prevent algorithmic bias in innovative tech if POC don’t have a seat at the table. Ron Wyden and I urged Google CEO Sundar Pichai to reaffirm his commitment to D&I and academic freedom. Now more than ever, @timnitGebru (@dair-community.social/bsky.social)’s departure makes this work essential.

Was pleased to be able to contribute to this important piece on Palantir's path to becoming the 'default operating system' for the UK government.
