Quite a few years had passed since I last felt so helpless and anguished on academic inequality and misadministration in Pak as I did today. I have faced this from 7th class to MPhil, and only faced it helplessly. This time it happened at the opening of #PMLaptopScheme (1/11) 🧵

Prime Minister's Youth Programme and HEC Pakistan asked for top 20 students from NDU to be invited to the ceremony and I was third from top in the list. The student affairs dept. never informed that there is going to be a rehearsal, missing which would make me ineligible to enter the main hall

I went today with more than 20 of my student colleagues and the management allowed only three students in the hall. I was absent from the list, and stood on gallery to watch the spectacle. One of the two students who had chance to meet the PM was below me in the merit list.-3

It didn't end here. None of the top 20 students invited to receive laptops entered the hall and either stood or sat on stairs in gallery of Convention Center's auditorium. I was enraged, not because I didn't get to meet the PM in the only chance that I had in 18 academic years.-4

But also because of the fact that I was the only student from KP in top 10. In total, only three students were from KP, one from Sindh, and the rest from Punjab (12) and ICT (4). This is not only a demographic conincedent. In the succeeding list, no student until #57 was outside

of Punjab or ICT. This is totally different from 2020 demographics of the largest department of the university (IR) which I share below (taken from an excel sheet that was shared with CRs during pandemic by university staff). I was the only high-achiever from KPK in IR today.-6

Last week I had thought to chalk out in complex Bourdeusian terms on how this (re)production of systematic inequality works. I even started working on a paper with a friend on it. But why does it matter if at we are still being discriminated against by our own uni admins.-7

It was not only negligence on part of the university staff. It was sheer disregard of anything that represents merit of underrepresented areas of the country. Instead of informing me about rehearsals, they preferred to call in two day-scholars to represent the university.-8

This comes from an admin for whom I have always voluntereed in past 6 years. I handled social media for 2 years, remained CR for 7 semesters, & always defended the repute of university in private conversations. I got blamed for missing something I had no knowledge of in return.-9

This is not the only time I suffocated in my academic life however. After my BS, the student affairs forced me to pay a fine despite submitting all receipts, and for which I received no notice. During my undergrad admissions I was refused scholarship at FCCU despite scoring..-10

97% in entry test due to less marks in SSC/HSSC. So I settled for NDU. During FSc, I could not get join the college in Peshawar where I secured a scholarship because the hostel was insecure and private hostel unaffordable. So I settled for Wensam. Talk about equal opportunities!

As the event management emphasized on greater focus on "dataism" and research by the students, I would also request Shaza Fatima Khawaja and Prime Minister's Youth Programme to start working on systemic inequality at govt level and see how it effects relative standing and opportunities for the youth.-12
