Drilling is due to start tomorrow, but first we need to melt 10 tonnes of snow (10,000 L of water). Usually this gets done by hand, but this year we have machinery to help 🎉 British Antarctic Survey 🐧 @NorskPolar Oceans & Sea Ice NPI Icefin Prof. Elin Darelius
And that’s a wrap! After 5 days of science and two separate boreholes we have finished our scientific programme for this season. It has been hugely successful, and now we start the process of packing the kit down British Antarctic Survey 🐧 @NorskPolar Oceans & Sea Ice NPI Icefin Prof. Elin Darelius
We’re on our way back to Troll! The mooring tower was raised this morning and then we hit the road. Approx. 6 days back to Troll excluding weather delays British Antarctic Survey 🐧 Oceans & Sea Ice NPI @NorskPolar Icefin Prof. Elin Darelius
The stagnant basinwater of Masfjorden can only be renewed if dense enough water reaches the sill and flows into the fjord - the students of Geofysisk institutt and RealfagUiB have deployed moorings in the fjord to learn more about this important process!
Mission completed! 50 days of remote field work and 50+ instruments installed by the Hot Water on Ice drilling crew in the ocean cavity below #Fimbulisen #TrollObservingNetwork when @NorskPolar, Bjerknessenteret, British Antarctic Survey 🐧, Cornell University and CNRS 🌍 teamed up!
