" It’s easy to say that star ratings are just a fact of life. But so once was smallpox. We could change, but the thing is I’m not entirely convinced we want to." Edinburgh Fringe fuels theatre’s co-dependent relationship with star ratings thestage.co.uk/opinion/edinbu…

Just another reminder to those of you Edinburgh Festival Fringe that you should absolutely go and see REVENGE: After The Levoyah Summerhall. It’s so well directed and written and acted. And I did the sound design. Which is also pretty good!

What happened with Elia Kazan and Arthur Miller is entirely knotted into post WW2 antisemitism and I don’t trust the dramaturgy or perspective of a show about this without any Jews involved in the storytelling.

I thought maybe we were past this in London theatre. But the lack of meaningful inclusion of Jewish artists in Jewish stories is shameful.

I still meet people who don’t actually know Arthur Miller was Jewish and this is because he had to play down that side of him as so many Jewish artists did in the 50s. But so many of his plays are clearly implicitly Jewish coded.

Most importantly I think a show about an American-Jewish intersection told by a British gentile team is making work that will be less rich and interesting than it could and should be.

After Hershel Fink and Falsettos it is almost funny watching other theatres and producers say. That was a them problem not an us problem. We are good people. We can tell these stories because we are smart good people.

Just seen the content warnings which make it pretty evident that antisemitism, Judaism and the holocaust are a part of this play. Who needs Jewish creatives though?

What are some great two hander plays that take place in a single setting (a room) in real time (an hour). Writing one of these and would love to read some masterly examples!
