Just a reminder that if you’re taking photos of dead critters for the iNaturalist project inaturalist.org/projects/sf-ba…, please shoot 1 organism per observation. Take multiple photos and a shot of it in the landscape so it’s easy to tell if it’s been observed. Sturgeon photo deets:

Grabbed water samples after a long day at work: Berkeley & Emeryville have what appears to be Heterosigma. Hercules and San Leandro did not. I’m really hoping to not see the bloom grow, but this is feeling a bit like last year. 1 dead bat ray in Emeryville

“San Francisco Bay has some of the highest levels of nutrient pollution of any estuary in the world”.

The solution to recurring harmful algal blooms in the Bay is to remove the fuel load, which means significantly reducing sewage pollution.

A little sampling of the bounce back diversity at seen at this weekend’s BioBlitz organized by Katie Noonan. Many hydroids and an astounding number of nudibranchs out feeding on them. Small stuff comes back quick as predicted, but long lived species?

Had the pleasure of running Bio-Rad’s Science of Opioid Dependence lab kit at McClymonds High in West Oakland today. Amazing gel results especially considering it was the first time students used micropipettes. Excited for the future of biology education at this school.

Fall colors are prime time in the eastern Sierra Nevada. Bonus was seeing a mushroom I can’t put a species name on that will now have to get cultured and sequenced.

Had a great weekend running a DNA sequencing class in Humboldt focused on fungi. One of the participants sequenced a Lactarius “truffle” they found and it doesn’t match anything in GenBank inaturalist.org/observations/1…

iNat user just reported a relatively fresh dead white sturgeon near Dumbarton. USGS probes don’t show anything unusual when it comes to oxygen. Big change in turbidity a few days back, I don’t have the expertise to interpret.

The biggest and longest harmful algal bloom in the Bay Area was caused by a tiny marine alga called Heterosigma akashiwo. How did it wig out and why now? 🦠

Got to check out laketech.com temporary probe buoy system in today. Monitoring like this over a full year would help decision making around how to guard against low O2 events in The Jewel of Oakland.

Rotary Nature Center Friends, a Lake Merritt focused group had me pivot from a Bioluminescence talk to on FridayZ It’s more story telling than I usually do for such talks. The group just posted it here: youtu.be/-COM00KIWo4

Really nice to disconnect for 18 hrs and not think about dead things from the Sf bay HAB. Ran a moth light event for Sugar Loaf State Park and then went gall hunting the next morning. Super stoked to see the sunburst gall and find an undescribed oak leaf gall!

Has an agency molecularly identified the Heterosigma akashiwo from the most recent ? O’Halloran et. al 2006 has sequences from Berkeley and it would be good to see if this is the same organism per conversation with Jim Carlton.

BC ~ canary in a coal mine the here are the overlooked organisms starting to die off. Mussels at 99%+ mortality and algal mat communities.

Conservation of the least charismatic organisms underpins the life of the charismatic ones.
