This is huge. Canada is home to most of the world's mining companies. Today, a group of Tanzanians has filed in Canadian court against Canadian mining giant Barrick Gold for grave human rights violations at the company’s North Mara gold mine in Tanzania. raid-uk.org/blog/tanzanian…

No other publication reports on these issues like The Narwhal. The growing climate risks on the east coast are made worse by industrial forestry and we can change that.

Such an inspiring organization! Consider sending some of your #GivingTuesday generosity their way if you're able, or learning more about the important work they do today. indigenousclimateaction.com/donate?ss_sour…

From head of the International Energy Agency Fatih Birol : "To say that 1.5C is dead and that we will never reach a peak [in emissions] before 2030 is dogmatic and in my view not a data-driven conclusion.” “The fact is that the chances of 1.5C are narrowing, but it is still achievable.”

This is so embarrassing. Canada is hosting the biggest United Nations biodiversity gathering of the decade and our ambassador is right now lobbying to weaken sustainable forestry standards. theguardian.com/environment/20…

"Despite obstructionist efforts from Canada, the European Parliament reached an agreement on a groundbreaking trade regulation that is poised to transform global forest supply chains and usher in a new, more globally equitable era of #forest protection." - NRDC 🌎🏡 #COP15montreal

The US isn’t a member of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity and doesn’t have a vote. The 30x30 target also doesn’t have a real strong basis in science. It could be great, so long as it isn’t allowed to cause more dispossession of Indigenous land around the world.

The data storytelling & art in this news piece is great. Sugar maple trees and forests are complex, and like all living things they are being drastically impacted by the build up of heat around our planet. ici.radio-canada.ca/info/2023/siro…

This clip explains how to make a naturally resilient forest more vulnerable to fire. Cut it all down, replant only softwoods, and spray glyphosate to kill the fire-resistant broadleaf trees.

We’re not doomed. “Ms. de Graaf said the pre-colonial Wabanaki forest was relatively old & complex, with a great diversity of species. But intensive timber harvesting has destroyed 99 per cent…” Wabanaki forests have incredible resilience when we respect its diversity.
