When I argued in "The Illusion of Democracy – Rethinking Universal Suffrage in Poor Nations" that our borrowed model of governance has failed us, some thought it heresy.

But today, no less a figure than former President Obasanjo has echoed the same concern, reminding us that even in Britain—the cradle of universal suffrage2—ghosts still vote.

If the architects of this system now admit its cracks, should we not, in Africa and other poor nations, summon the courage to rethink? To imagine new models that fits our soil, our history, and our peculiar struggles?

The West knows that democracy is not the utopian model of governance that they proposed, but ego would not allow its revision. The age of uncritical worship of Western democracy is ending. The time to chart our own path is now
