Treating education and housing stability as disconnected silos is a recipe for disaster. Some schools have figured that out. While housing>shelter, no student should have to do homework under the dome light of a car or a street lamp. hechingerreport.org/a-shelter-in-a… The Hechinger Report
Powerful session on needs of students exp. homelessness & foster care. Struck by Earl Edwards, Ph.D. point that schools never part of problem statement on homelessness, so they aren't considered part of solution. Great insight from Dr. Matt Morton Joseph Bishop, Kenyon Lee Whitman, Erin Simon.

It was an incredible honor to be Art Longworth's atty. Art taught me so much about how systems wrong ppl. But more importantly, he & this case reinforced how right it is to give a second chance to people who never got a first chance. crosscut.com/news/2022/04/a… @Crosscut Claudia Rowe

Washington state is making progress on prevention of youth homelessness, but it will take a lot of effort in the years to come. Read/listen to WA wants to secure housing for youth exiting state care | Crosscut crosscut.com/news/2022/08/w… @Crosscut Youth Today Chapin Hall
The stories in Samantha M. Shapiro's latest for NYT Magazine are the heart wrenching reason behind much of our work. For more about the early signs of youth #homelessness in rural America and how it becomes a barrier to education: nyti.ms/3RhvlvO
4.2 million young people experience homelessness in the U.S. I applaud pointsourceyouth for working to make a difference, and Washington state for leading the way. Find out more about their new initiative to prevent youth homelessness in 5 communities: bit.ly/3p6js3X
Actually preventing young people from experiencing homelessness is often possible but rarely a major piece of our homelessness strategies. Senator Patty Murray is working on legislation that will go a long ways towards fixing this & making sure few young people ever sleep on the streets.
First time funding from Senator Patty Murray will establish a new youth homelessness prevention effort at the federal level. This will reduce homelessness across populations and lead to many more young people living in stable housing and never knowing what homelessness is like.
