I think it’s finally available so - I have a virtual poster up at LSA! It’s called ‘Variation in Case licensing in five Malayic languages of Borneo’ - I discuss microvariation in voice & offer a Case-based analysis. Take a look / feel free to email me questions if you’re “here”!

I’ve learned that I have been saying Kyiv the Russian way. It’s not a small thing. It’s important that we honor Ukrainian identity, language, and independence.

Imagine looking around and thinking PhDs are going into industry because they don’t realize how great being a tenured and well-paid professor is

The paper from our LSA talk in January is up. A (grim) preview of the direction that coverage of the new "free expression" resolution is likely to take, but despite that, we also suggest actionable ways we can all work toward bettering linguistics. ling.auf.net/lingbuzz/006590

Now that I’m moving SO soon, I should probably announce - I’ve accepted a postdoc fellowship at the National University of Singapore and will be moving to Singapore at the end of this month! Really so grateful for this opportunity and can’t wait to start!

Being on search committees has confirmed for me how arbitrary success in academia is. Yes, you have to be smart and capable to make it. But you could have been just as smart and just as capable and not made it. Basically, we work our asses off to buy a lottery ticket.

When there's a community that values researchers depending on how many papers and where they are published, this is the result: junior researchers feeling pressured to show they follow the system in order to get a job.

The Call for Papers for #SEALS32 is now open. The 32nd Meeting of the Southeast Asian Linguistics Society will be hosted by Chiang Mai University, Thailand, from May 16–18, 2023. Deadline for abstract submission is January 31. See seals32.human.cmu.ac.th for further details.

There’s a lot of conference deadlines coming up which means many of us are going to be reviewing abstracts soon. This is your friendly reminder to ✨be kind✨ You can reject an abstract without being a bully - and you can even highlight something positive about it, too!

As a linguist, I can say: There are many things to be concerned about, but this isn't one of them. This is just Language doing what it does and what it has been doing since there's been Language.

I find that students who don’t know their way around email etiquette tend to be from underrepresented groups & I refuse to drag them for it—especially on here. we often talk about the whiteness of professionalism. why don’t these arguments extend to our students? Academic Chatter™

Linguistics would benefit from more solid descriptive and typological work. Maybe devoting more resources, journals, conferences, etc to description and typology. I sometimes think we have had too much emphasis on theory
