Today I was reminded again that being a Black therapist who works with Black women is important. A client felt embarrassed because her hair wasn’t completely done. I told sis she could finish her hair install while we processed her feelings. The therapy session was a success.

One way to build up confidence is by keeping promises you make to yourself. If you always let yourself down, you’ll start feeling like there’s nothing stable to depend on internally. Confidence boils down to having trust in your own abilities. That’s the antidote to insecurity.

When a child tells you what they want be when they grow up, a lot of the times that’s exactly what they came on Earth to do. It’s important to nurture this desire, rather than attempt to destroy it.

A lot of us in adulthood find ourselves hollow and wandering because our desire was stolen from us as a child—in order to be “realistic.” Due to the lack of accessibility and capitalism, we lose this initial connection to destiny. Fortunately for us, we can always find it again.

You deserve everything. Be obsessed with upgrading your life. Because nobody else gonna do that for you. Take a rest if you must, but never quit the journey of trying to be better than yourself. No matter who you are, you can always change & become a better version of yourself.

When I got into Stanford the first time, my high school classmates told me it was because I was brown to my face in our calculus class. But they didn’t take into account that I begged my mom for an old SAT blue book at a thrift store - that was my test prep. (1/4)

Day 1 of residency ✅ Note to self: Yes, you’re the doctor but you’re a NEW doctor. Give yourself grace and room to grow into the new role. It’s okay that you don’t know everything. It’s okay if you mess up. Find the lesson, improve, rinse and repeat. It will be well.

Having medical students email me to introduce themselves and ask me when and where to report is crazy. Still getting used to it lol
