J C Bach the youngest son of J S was born in Leipzig 290 years ago today. He was known as 'the London Bach' and lived the last 20 years of his life in London Buried in the graveyard at St Pancras Old Church he became one of the most important composers in 18th century England

Henry Purcell was born on this day in 1659 Here he is in the National Portrait Gallery alongside Handel. They never met because Purcell died aged only 36 in 1695, when Handel was only 10 years old. However, Handel deeply respected Purcell's music

The first episode of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy was originally broadcast on this day in 1979. This BBC2 screening was swiftly followed by a two part omnibus repeat on BBC1 during Christmas 1979.
