On this #InternationalMensDay through the Men in Red Cross, we have introduced a mentorship program for the male youth in our organisation across all our 47 branches. This is in line with this year's theme #BetterHealthForMenAndBoys. #IMD2020

The CPEYK EU funded project closes with calls for more #YouthEmpowerment initiatives across Kenya. Happening in Kwale County, our Sec Gen Dr. Dr. Asha Mohammed , Kwale Governor H.E. Salim Mvurya and European Union In Kenya join the youth across the region to celebrate their achievements.

During this morning's courtesy visit to H.E. Governor Salim Mvurya & the County Commissioner; Dr. Dr. Asha Mohammed & the European Union In Kenya team acknowledged the support from the County to run CPEYK in Kwale. Partnership with the County is what has also seen the youth here succeed.

In Kwale, the project has supported 24 youth groups who were taken through various trainings and supported to come up with different livelihood options to venture in. Some have started their own businesses, while others have been incorporated into skill based employment.

Pongwe Kikoneni which is a group in Shimoni Sub Location was started in 2018 and has 8 members who went through the CPEYK livelihood skills training. The group runs a fish business which has enabled them to earn an income and fend for themselves and their families.

One of the main aims of CPEYK is to create independence for the youth where they empower each other to innovatively come up with ideas that shape their livelihoods. Here, the group through the fish business has birthed a fruit parlour that continues to generate more income.

"Through these two businesses I have my daily bread. I never lack. And now our group has the opportunity to hire other youth in the community especially those who are vulnerable to get into drugs or violence." Mshee Omar, member of Pongwe Kikoneni group.

When Gombato Bongwe group was formed, radicalisation of the youth to join violent extremist groups was high. The group which has 8 members all have personal stories of either encountering violence or losing a family member to violence. But now their lives have transformed.

Since 2017, they have been involved in different business ventures & only recently did they settle for poultry farming which is showing positive income generating prospects. Additionally, they engage with other youth through peace dialogues to enhance stability in the community.

In the past 4 years, we collaborated on a joint program that focused on Conflict Prevention Peace and Economic Opportunities for Youth in Kenya (CPEYK- CPEYK ) which has impacted the lives of over 5000 youth in the Coast and North Eastern Counties.

Finally, we are excited to showcase the successes of the CPEYK project, by officially releasing a photo- journey book which captures milestones in the 8 Counties. This would not have been possible without the dedication of European Union In Kenya & Kenya Red Cross teams!
