Since 2008, over 250 local media outlets have closed across Canada. This Tuesday, 12 members of parliament will decide whether that decline will continue, or whether we begin to turn the tide. Help them do the right thing by signing our petition at rebuildcommunitymedia.ca

Earlier today, we joined Ottawa ACORN and CAWI-IVTF in calling on City of Ottawa to strengthen their proposal at Planning Committee tomorrow which sets a target of ZERO percent affordable housing for rentals during a housing crisis. Our press release: horizonottawa.ca/press_release_…

Prime example of how OC Transpo special constables will turn a non-issue into a violent situation where everyone around feels less safe, not more. Defund and end the program. We can do so much better.

Horizon Ottawa City of Ottawa It sounds like they made an issue out of a non-issue. But even if it wasn't, we prefer social service providers who know how to intervene without violence, in a spirit of community, care, and compassion. Violent enforcement like this makes everyone feel less safe, not more.

Reliability is a safety issue. You can address this in one of two ways: 🚌more🚌buses🚌 or 👮🏻‍♂️more👮🏻‍♂️cops👮🏻‍♂️ Slash the special constables budget and give riders the safety-maximizing reliability we need.

Riders should be able to press the emergency button when they need help and not have cops arrive. (Clearly this woman didn't need cops; nor were cops suited to helping her.) Reallocate the transit cops budget to service workers who are better able to help in these situations.

We are glad this person received help. That said, Sarah is using 'no bystanders stopped' to justify the special constables program. But this actually drives our effort to make the program obsolete. Increase the likelihood of bystanders stopping, decrease the 'need' for cops.

🌱Help us imagine a positive vision of transit safety that doesn't rely on special constables. 🌳What would help you feel like Ottawa's transit spaces (buses, trains, stations & stops) are pleasant and safe?

Even when the LRT is down the stations should be open and vibrant...with any number of people - riders, red vests, vendors, etc. - to help guide others to their destination.

Our first transit safety community discussion is this Monday, August 8th at 6:30pm on Zoom! Have you ever felt unsafe on OC Transpo? What would have helped? Want to join the discussion? DM us & we'll be in touch. (Participants will receive a $20 honorarium.)

Sorry but we are never going to get over the fact that OC Transpo gives #FreeTransit for life to the highly paid people tasked with punishing riders who can't afford the fare.

Being unable to afford bus fare is a source of anxiety for many, but especially for our undocumented neighbours...for whom being $3.75 short could mean deportation. OC Transpo must offer a sanctuary service and refuse to fine or report riders without status. #StatusForAll

At risk of engaging with what is probably not a particularly good faith question, here's what we think: First, no, we do not reject that there is an issue. We held focus groups with transit riders last summer and everyone expressed some safety concern or other. We believe them.
