Fun fact: Tolkien got the word ‘eleventy’ from Old English. After 70, 80, and 90, Old English kept going to tenty, eleventy and twelfty: hundtēontiġ, hundenleftiġ, hundtwelftiġ. This is thought to be a trace of an ancient base-12 number system once common among Germanic tribes.

Today is the feast of the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, 'Lady Day'. In England it was once the spring quarter-day, when contracts would begin and servants took new jobs, and until 1752 it was also the start of the New Year. A day for new beginnings, new life of many kinds.

A door blows open in your mind when you learn about the suffix -le, it explains so much. People used to add it to verbs to mean ‘rapidly’, more than once, or continuously. So originally, to ramble is to roam on, to jostle is to joust repeatedly, to jiggle is to dance a jig

Easter Eve is traditionally the time of the Harrowing of Hell, when Christ descended into the underworld and set its captives free. This story inspired many powerful retellings in medieval literature and art, including this majestic Anglo-Saxon poem: aclerkofoxford.blogspot.com/2015/04/open-w…

Tonight is St Mark's Eve, a spooky night in British folklore: it's said that if you keep watch in the church porch, you can learn who will die in the coming year. Tonight the devil harvests fernseed, and if you catch it you become 'wise as the devil'... archive.org/details/lincol…
