"The Rushdie Affair has yet to be subject to a sustained analysis by historians. Journalists and political scientists continue to focus on the fatwa, despite the fact the protests against the novel in Britain predated Khomeini’s decree by two months." cambridge.org/core/journals/…

I've started writing my next book, 'Never Cross a Picket Line', for Verso Books. It's a history of picketing & picket lines in Britain, primarily in the last third of the 20th century. Anyone with any good picket related reading / watching etc. recommendations, get in touch!

Volunteer Chris found these great photos from a series simply titled “Holiday Scenes” which we think were produced as part of a Trades Union Congress campaign for Holidays with Pay, which started in 1911, and showed the benefits of rest & recreation

1/ Sadly, David Olusoga is right about the St Cuthbert's Village council estate he grew up in (see next tweet) - it was not a success - but he's also so right about the libraries and sports centres that allowed working-class kids like him to flourish back then.
