Today we publish Climate Change Committee annual report on progress in reducing UK emissions. We reflect on policy progress in a year that brought the UK’s first recorded 40C day and spiralling fossil fuel costs. And there’s a reality check on the acceleration needed for 2030 and beyond. 🧵

A few more thoughts on the possibility of life beyond Earth. All these thoughts are guesses. The lack of firm evidence for alien intelligence (so far) is sometimes called the Fermi Paradox, and it is a paradox. Put simply, there has been over 10 billion years and there are many

Ten months ago, we launched the Vesuvius Challenge to solve the ancient problem of the Herculaneum Papyri, a library of scrolls that were flash-fried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Today we are overjoyed to announce that our crazy project has succeeded. After 2000

Ten years ago, I had a chance to meet veterans of D-Day in Normandy. On this 80th anniversary, let’s remember the brave service members who stormed those beaches despite long odds, and whose example continues to show us the way.

This year's intake of recruits to the Gurkhas has begun to arrive in the UK. They've landed in Manchester, having said goodbye to their family and friends back in Nepal yesterday. Now it's on to Catterick. In all, 323 recruits have been selected to join the army this year.
