Most reform discourse just assumes that critical services will be incredibly expensive, and instead focuses on who should bear the burden of paying for them. This is the wrong approach; instead, ask "How did these things get so expensive?"

Municipal property tax positivity is also the correct take. Low property tax in developing suburbs sets a cycle in motion where HOAs provide "public goods" privately; then the city can't raise spending b/c a sizable fraction of residents are already paying for those goods.

Diner stories used to exist because the candidates went there. Now that they're mostly about the customers, we should take advantage of the COVID break and switch to reporting from hair salons/barbershops. Just as talky and more likely to capture a broad range of the public.
