1955 | Emmett Till was murdered on this day. Mamie Till-Mobley, Till’s mother, held an open casket funeral, the horrors of racism never seen so plainly for some. Black leaders and activists across the country were energized, and the Civil Rights Movement was ignited.

1961 | Motown Records released its first number-one hit “Please Mr. Postman” by the Marvelettes. The record label would go on to release classics such as Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell - 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' and The Temptations - 'My Girl'.

1964 | The Philadelphia Rebellion broke out, following reports and instances of ongoing police brutality that had plagued the community for years.

2005 | Hurricane Katrina reached a Category 5 hurricane on this day impacting the lives of 15 million Americans and displacing many Black Americans to this day.

2008 | Barack Obama became the first Black person to accept the presidential nomination for a major political party. He would go on to win his bid for presidency twice.

2016 | Colin Kapernick made his first media appearance to speak on why he sat during the national anthem while on the San Francisco 49ers. He shifted his silent protest from sitting down to kneeling to protest police brutality and has since become an activist.

2020 | Death of beloved actor and first Black superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to have their own feature length film, Chadwick Boseman.

Now I can’t get the phenomena around this day in history out of my mind.
