If a student turns something in late, it doesnโ€™t mean the student has less understanding of the content, assignments turned in on time doesnโ€™t mean the student knows the content more. A simple leadership tip: โ€˜If' a student learns should be more important than 'when.'

I always make our warmup with the date. Today: a rhombus has diagonals of 4 and 9. Find the lengths of the sides and the angles formed by the sides. AND THE SIDE LENGTH WAS 4.9 AND THE ANGLE MEASURE OF ONE OF THE RIGHT TRIANGLES WAS 24ยฐ! 4.9 24 4/9/24 Serendipity

Maybe the answer to โ€œwhen are we going to use this?โ€ is: You might not. But people who build bridges, predict financial outcomes, invent vaccines, engineer defense systems, operate on you, develop your games, design stadiums are using math. Itโ€™s not random. Be aware.

I experienced a lot of direct, explicit instruction. I was an A student. I memorized the steps, and was paralyzed as a problem-solver. In other words, I did math without understanding math, right into university. It's one of the greatest tragedies of my schooling career.

For Teacher Appreciation Week, May 6-10: Chocolate and Starbucks cards are great, but please consider reaching back in time to a teacher who made a difference in your life. Tell them what you appreciate/d about them specifically, how they helped you and what youโ€™re doing nowโ€ฆ

I taught arithmetic and geometric sequences almost exclusively with visuals this year and I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ll ever look back

Teachers asked me for a picture of Tier 1 learning. This was the result. Something allowing for teacher autonomy & creativity, but also providing years worth of growth impact built into it to make learning happen & close the gaps. Eventually turned it into a book.
