When I asked my colleague for help with a private project, he thought my last commit messages were very amusing, e.g., "i don't know what i'm doing", "plowing ahead somehow" and "something works, something doesn't".

The very next day after our senior developer left, his legacy and mantra - clean code - was immediately destroyed with multiple commits containing many many many lines of code commented out. And all were merged into production. Send thoughts and prayers, please.
