I was mostly relieved when our 1989 football team recorded the first perfect football season ever at Williams. I just did not want the kids to come close and fall short. Their resilience and second half performance was tremendous. They earned that result.

I bet former Eph sprinter David Bass ’77 remembers the scene at an indoor track meet at Union College when I warned the Union coach not to put his hands on me.

John Berry, now Dr. John Berry-Candelario ‘99 is one of the most remarkable Williams stories I’ve seen at Williams. Donated a kidney to his brother and could not play football his senior year. Now John is a spine surgeon.

The best natural athlete I’ve seen here at Williams is Scott Perry ’76. He was a standout in track & field and still owns a NESCAC record and he was drafted in the 4th round by the Cincinnati Bengals to play cornerback.

Trevor Bayliss ’99 is another remarkable story. He was sent home to make plans to die by the doctors at the Hutchinson Cancer Center. He did not die. He qualified for NCAAs on a track relay and now is Oncologist doctor at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Mass.

Every year when the Nebraska football team plays in a bowl game I get a phone call from trackie Lee (Kiechel) Koles ‘93 at halftime.

Before Charlie Caldwell coached at football at Princeton he coached at Williams College for 15 years (76-37-6). Williams beat Princeton at Princeton in 1942, 19-7. Caldwell was hired at Princeton in 1945. He also coached Eph hoops (78–66) and baseball (100–74).
