James VI’s crowned ‘IR’ cypher, which stands for ‘Jacobus Rex’ (King James), appears on this hardhead that was minted sometime between 1588 & 1590. It was one of the last Scottish coins to be made from billon (an alloy that contains a small amount of silver). From the Hunterian.
