The final 1916 executions in Kilmainham Gaol took place on 12 May when Seán MacDiarmada and James Connolly were shot in Stonebreakers Yard. We believe that, unlike the other thirteen leaders, Connolly was executed at the end of the yard nearest the entry gates. 1/2

In his recent book on Connolly, historian Dr. Conor McCabe, has established that Connolly seems to have been brought to Kilmainham Gaol from Dublin Castle in a horse-drawn general service military wagon, and not an ambulance as usually believed. (image Gaius Cornelius) 2/2

Connolly was a huge part of the ITGWU's early history, from the Lockout, the Citizen Army, and the Rising - but to claim that he was a "co-founder" of the union is ahistorical horseshit.

Every 12 May the Irish Labour Party tells us it's the party of Connolly, and every year it neglects to mention that at the ITCU annual conference in August 1916, not only did it refuse to back his actions, it wouldn't even condemn his execution. Time is great healer I guess...

Le Petit Journal captured this 1900s protest at Trinity College Dublin, where nationalists raised the Transvaal flag as Joseph Chamberlain M.P. received an honorary degree. Many in Ireland supported the Boers during the Second Boer War.

Well now. Transcription, annotation, and (initial) proofing done on next volume of Connolly's writings - the Complete Shorter Works. Just the introductions and a short essay on Connolly's Marxism to write up, and it's ready to send on as a completed draft ✊️

Well. Look at that! All tickets gone for the Connolly/Joyce Bloomsday walk. I'll be adding an extra walk, Sunday 15 June at 12pm, next week.
