2% of the population (aged over 85) use this amount of hospital bed days because acute illness in this age group is accompanied by a physical and cognitive decline that will persist until remedied. Properly staffed offsite rehabilitation beds would transform our hospitals.

The headline issue: a consultant earned €1m from the HSE Ireland in a year with overtime payments. I expect that must have been on an old contract, I don't see it being technically possible (even for a highly disgruntled and highly motivated consultant) on a post 2011 contract.
