I just finished "Paved Paradise" by Henry Grabar, and boy does it have some gems. Lots of the solutions to our urban woes are already being put in place - look at Austin - but this should be read by every city council across America. My favorite quotes can be found here. 🧵

Why don’t we build homes people wish to live in? Why do we keep building low-density, car-dependent suburbs? What needs to be done to create a tram renaissance? Have a listen to our MD: David Milner freewheeling.info/the-freewheeli…

London's bus speeds are at an all time low. It's time to #FreeTheBus. Bus lanes, bus gates, 'blue paths'. Here's my piece on why TfL's plans to rely on traffic light signal changes won't work. standard.co.uk/comment/tfl-lo…

This is very worrying. Real concerns now that the Cabinet member for ‘Climate Change and Placemaking’ is about to incentivise car travel through the very ‘placemaking’ public realm where £500k has been invested to create a valuable pedestrian-friendly zone. What’s going on?

Would you like to live here? Nearly all the evidence suggests that your air would be cleaner, your souls (and your carbon footprint) lighter, your children more free, your neighbours more likely to be friends than strangers. The gifts of Gentle Density when it is beautiful.

Long-term empty homes have risen by 93% in London during a housing crisis which sees over half of all England's homeless families coming from London (the national rise is 32% in 8 years) - reform of the Empty Dwelling Management Order is long overdue Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Gov as Adam Hug argues

Labour talk about change, but tomorrow will be defending the previous governments policy. This policy deems carbon emissions irrelevant to planning decisions on transport, on the basis that the gov has a credible plan in place to meet legal targets! crowdjustice.com/case/avoid-the…

Every single London borough uses more land for roads than houses. In some boroughs, such as Tower Hamlets, more than twice as much land is used for road than houses despite only a third of households having access to a car or van there.

Welcome to clean, prosperous, friendly Zwolle, Netherlands, where cyclists outnumber drivers, nobody needs to wear a helmet, there are no dubious campaigns against bus stop bypasses, and both young and old enjoy the freedom of safe, segregated cycling. This could be your city.

It's truly disheartening to see the hundreds of poplar trees being cut down in sandwich. These majestic trees, with their soaring height and rustling leaves, contribute so much to our landscape and air quality. It feels like a significant loss for the environment

The moment a Low Traffic Neighbourhood goes in, drivers who want to rat run through your street will start shouting that ‘the old and disabled can’t cycle!!!’. As Zwolle, Netherlands, clearly shows, segregated cycling and LTNs *increase* freedom for those with mobility issues.

passenger numbers for the reopened Northumberland Line are "five times their original estimate". the way the DfT estimates ridership for rail projects is very obviously broken, with negative implications on what actually gets built bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

More lazy reporting of the OBR Building 1.5m homes will fix the housing affordability crisis, claims govt - additional supply should bring prices and rents down. No, says OBR: this would only add 0.5% to the overall stock and would reduce prices by 0.8% theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
