Our eco warriors have been busy doing 'secret surveys' across the school. We are half way through Switch off Fortnight and are glad to see so many children making an effort to save energy! Which class will be the winner?! #switchofffortnight #EDF

The JTAs had such a tough job trying to decide a winner for the 'Be Safe, Be Seen' coat competition. There were so many wonderful entries! Results will be announced in tomorrow's assembly. #RoadSafetyWeek

We have reached the end of Switch off Fortnight. Thank you to everyone who made an effort to save energy. Our secret surveys found that the class which saved the most energy was... the Grey Hawks! They consistently kept the door closed and turned off the board and lights. #SOF

The Grey Hawks also had some fantastic tips in their assembly this morning for how to have an eco-friendly Christmas... Wrap presents with brown paper and holly rather than sparkly paper and plastic bows, send recycled Christmas cards or even e-cards and avoid glitter! #ecoxmas

We are excited to introduce our new initiative for the new year. Beginning this week, we are starting 'WOW' a.k.a 'Walk Once a Week'. We want every child to try and walk, scoot or cycle one day each week to keep our school gate congestion and pollution free! #livingstreets #WOW

CHS Eco Committee (@chs_eco) 's Twitter Profile Photo

‘WOW’ is coordinated by Living Streets, a UK charity, to help as many children as possible experience the benefits that walking to school brings. WOW is a pupil-led initiative and if children travel sustainably once a week for a month, they get rewarded with a badge. Easy peasy!

If you live too far away to walk, you can park and stride. However, to park and stride, your car must be at least a 10 minute walk away. Alternatively, you could get off the bus or tube a few stops earlier and walk the remaining distance.

We are kick starting the new WOW initiative with a walking bus this Friday, 17th. It is open to everyone and we look forward to seeing you there! #rainraingoaway

Our walking bus had a great turn out despite the wind and rain. Walking to school can be a fun, sociable activity as well as a healthy way to start the day. Why not pick one day a week to walk with your friends? You could even stop off for hot chocolate on the way! #walkonceaweek

The eco committee gave out lots of badges for those who managed to walk at least once each week during January. We hope we will be giving out even more in February!

On Tuesday we had a visit from Blendavenda Smoothies . We talked about the benefits of cycling and healthy eating, then used pedal power to create delicious fruit smoothies! #sustainabletravel #healthyeating

Our year 3 classes have been learning all about the problems of deforestation and were devastated to hear that orangutans are critically endangered as a result of trees being cut down for palm oil. We wrote letters to Defra UK to ask for their help.

Our JTAs announced a new competition this week. They asked the KS2 children to design a banner to encourage children to travel to school in a sustainable way. The winning design will be made into a real banner to go outside school and the winner will also get a brand new bike!

CHS Eco Committee (@chs_eco) 's Twitter Profile Photo

It's not too late to enter if you want to take part. Bring your banner design to Miss Hunter tomorrow to be entered in to the competition. #sustrans #sustainabletravel

At our last eco meeting we talked about how the 'walk once a week' scheme is going and gave out the February badges. It's great to see so many people getting involved and we hope, as the weather gets warmer, we'll have even more sustainable travellers! #wow

Plastic pollution is set to treble in the next decade unless action is taken to deal with the problem. Our eco committee made this powerful video to enter the 'save us from plastic rap-off' competition #saveusfromplastic
