This is a fair analysis but it is also worth pointing out that funders of academic research are supposed to remain at arm's length from government. 'Curiosity-driven' is not the sideshow, but a euphemism for what should be their main goal, supporting the best research out there.

Was just served by a student in a shop in town. They asked me how my summer had been. I replied “brat”. There was a short period of silence but I interpreted it as them thinking “I used to think you were an out of touch man in his 40s but now I know you’re actually pretty cool”
