Visited Derry Youth Court today to see firsthand how our justice system is working for young people. Very grateful to have been granted access At the forefront of my mind is the age of criminal responsibility, prevention, early intervention and supporting our most vulnerable

Yesterday my team made the Education authority & Department of Education to hear what steps they are taking to safeguard & protect children. They sought assurances on immediate actions to support children back to school. We must also address systemic issues to combat racism

Such an informative and important meeting. Hearing first hand from young people and their families gave a valuable insight. Felt emotional hearing how challenging life can be and the fear that comes with this. We need a public awareness campaign; and up to date data 📊

1/2 Today, the Commissioner and NICCY staff met with the Education Authority’s anti-bullying team to discuss how schools are tackling the issue. This remains a significant focus for NICCY and one which demands more engagement with children and young people.

I agree with Lauren Bond of Secondary Students’ Union NI speaking on Good Morning Ulster with morning ref mobile phones in schools. Well said Lauren 👏👏 Wondering how, if at all, young people were engaged in decision making process by Education NI

1/ To be effective, school policies around mobile devices should be co-designed with the pupils. Careful consideration needs to be given to access to devices for: -accessibility (e.g. disabled/ neurodivergent children) -management of health conditions -safety & mental health

2/ We need to equip young people with the skills to use technology to their advantage, & emotional regulation, self awareness skills to recognise & manage problematic use. It's part of social & emotional learning, & relationships education. Let's get this into ALL our schools.
