Brexit border bewilderment. New post on my Brexit & Beyond Blog. No, it doesn't discuss the local elections results, but instead has the latest on import controls plus a deep dive into the convoluted issues beneath the Ireland-UK asylum row: chrisgreybrexitblog.blogspot.com/2024/05/brexitโ€ฆ

Of all the Brexit news stories, pint bottles of champagne is undoubtedly the most ... oh, words fail me ...

FWIW, my analysis of the issue, from January: chrisgreybrexitblog.blogspot.com/2024/01/the-brโ€ฆ

It's true that the 2% figure is adjusted for inflation. But the figure given immediately before, stating that 'the value of UK exports was ยฃ862 billion in the 12 months to February 2024', is not adjusted for inflation.

I hate to be pedantic (and no doubt this will mean I'll be labelled as one of those doomsters Kemi Badenoch is calling out here) but there's a few problems with the data the biz/trade sec is quoting here.
When you correct them, the picture looks a little different...

a lovely afternoon break to attend the citizenship ceremony of the first refugee we hosted 6.5 years ago.

From being homeless after standard rapid refugee status eviction w barely any English to now having a good job as a licenced building site lift operator. 1/3

โ€œIf the medium-sized countries arenโ€™t banding together the giants are going to sit on us.โ€

The ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿคฏ part is how UK politics reached a level of nostalgia-nationalist delusion that thatโ€™s considered a profound insight, not a statement of the obvious.

There seems to be no sleight-of-hand the govt won't employ to claim the Rwanda policy as a success, but I suspect that those disposed to support it are as sceptical about the claims as those disposed to oppose it are disgusted by them.

A key question & I'd really like to know the answer, too (@stevepeers?). Given Priti Patel (!) was complaining in 2022 about poss of refugees (not AS) reaching UK via IE, it seems unlikely that UK wouldn't have invoked, or at least mentioned, such an agreement if it existed.

'The number of UK businesses trading with the EU has fallen to a three-year low. Those having no option but to cease trading with the EU continues to grow. This is a worrying sign for businesses that have traditionally relied on a European customer base.โ€ thebusinessdesk.com/northwest/newsโ€ฆ

Tice's view on returning migrants to France without French consent is legally absurd, as explained here. But if it *were* legal, then Ireland could simply do it to the UK in turn.
