Two extremely annoying study buddies today! I'm on pet-sitting duties for my sons' tamagotchis. These things are surprisingly needy!! One has already somehow died 🪦😬 Will add this to the already substantial list of things that distract me from working... #phdlife

Today's the feast of St Sebastian, by tradition a 3rd Century martyr. The cult was more popular on the continent than in England, but he survives in several early 16th Century images, as here on the screen at Wellingham, Norfolk, probably because of his association with Plague.

#mysterymonday Mysterious shadows… 🔍 On one of the pillars in the Crypt there is a tall shadow, marked into the stone, which looks like a ghostly figure. A Cathedral mystery… 🤔 📷 Mid-20th century postcard, from the Cathedral collections © Chapter of Canterbury Cathedral

I have tried and tried to work 'digitally', but I've realised I'm just too old school for it. So I gave up and fired up the printer. Now I'm swamped in piles of paper but loving it. Concentration vastly increased and ideas are flowing like the ink from my pen 📝☺️ #phdlife

@RevRichardColes On your next visit to Ely you’ll have to pop up to the Stained Glass Museum and see our panels of St Vincent too - here he is shown on the grid iron & being consoled by the angels in these c.1225 French panels

Was so disappointed and angry to receive this email yesterday. 'Voluntary Severance Scheme'. I wonder just how 'voluntary' it is in reality. The email just gets worse as it goes on. Dreadful. Appalled by UKC once again. The staff deserve better. The students deserve better.

Got a lovely surprise from my new (old) book when I opened it to find 2 Canterbury Gothic stained glass postcards! They show pilgrims on their way to visit Becket's shrine, from a window in the Trinity Chapel. Going to put them up in my workspace ❤️

2/3 The Martyrdom of St Thomas of Canterbury, another Norwich cloister boss. Urged on by demons, four knights burst into the cathedral chapel where Thomas is kneeling at the consecration, and kill him.

Nice to hear about what's being described as 'the first super-university' on BBC Radio 4 Today, nice to hear soundbite frm Acting Vice Chancellor. Would have been even nicer if University of Kent had informed me, or the staff who, having been treated appallingly for years, had no prior notice.

Resited Saxon carving at St Kyneburgha, Castor. Apparently it's Christ pointing at the moon and the sun, not learning to juggle like I first thought.. #TympanumTuesday

I took photos of some burn marks (like candle marks) that were all over the base of the timbers - but it wasn't until I zoomed in on my computer and saw minute symbols, barely visible to the eye, delicately cut into the wood next to the marks.
