Repeated reading is not the only option for building fluency. Reading lots of texts only once, often w/ an adult or peer listening, correcting, defining words, &/or asking comprehension ?s, also has pos effects on fluency & comprehension in a # of studies. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/07…

Improve Tier 1 Mental Health Support! Student-to-counselor ratios right now are 400:1 or worse. This has been normalized & is unacceptable. The resources are there & I’m calling on states to invest in reducing these ratios because counselors & students deserve better.

When it comes to evidence-based reading instruction, we all have unfinished learning. The expectation is not for any one person to know it all, but rather that every person gets on the learning road.

🧵 Imagine you went out for a meal. You’re happily enjoying your starter when the waiter whips it away from you & plonks down your main course. You’re a few bites in & then the same happens with your dessert, then your coffee. Then the waiter quickly clears the table & closes up

As someone who has taught reading intervention, I’m pretty quiet on the reading wars except to say that when you use the term “war” you will end up with casualties. You’ll dehumanize. You’ll create enemies in a way that prevents dialogue. Phonics matter. Blending matters.

We ALL teach #literacy! “Disciplinary literacy… respects the varied ways that students read, reason, write, think, speak, and, most important, participate in specific content areas.” #nced #disciplinaryliteracy

As I get older, I realize this idea is true quite often. Not always, but enough that it helps me to step back and reflect on how to best help myself and others. Via instagram.com/thirdeyethough…
