1/10 This week in Nairobi, leaders from across Eastern Africa came together at a UNESCO workshop to confront a dangerous force tearing through classrooms, communities & platforms—hate speech. Their message: peace is not passive. It must be taught, protected & made digital ready.

2/10 Held on the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, the forum echoed the UN Secretary-General’s warning: “Hate speech is an alarm bell. The louder it rings, the greater the threat of genocide.” In Nairobi, that alarm was met with dialogue, urgency and shared resolve.

3/10 Opening the forum, UNESCO Regional Director Louise Haxthausen reminded participants: “No one is born to hate. But in our connected world, hate travels farther and faster than truth. Our response must be rooted in inclusion, education and digital responsibility.”

4/10 UN Resident Coordinator Stephen Jackson urged collective action: “This is not just Kenya’s burden. It’s a global contagion and we must treat it like one. Peace is built by listening, not shouting.”

5/10 UN RC also called on respect for rule of law “When the Constitution promises dignity, freedom and protection, institutions must deliver. Hate speech is not abstract. It leads to real harm. Upholding the rule of law is part of countering hate.”

6/10 Representing the CS for Education, Director General Dr Elias Abdi stressed the link between peace and education: “We can’t separate peace from education. To build tolerance, we must teach it. Through peace education, our children learn values that unite our country.”

7/10 He added that education in Kenya fosters cohesion from the ground up: “Our schools bring together children from diverse ethnic groups. They don’t just learn—they live unity. It’s where they first meet, grow, and understand national cohesion as a lived experience.”

8/10 Kenya NatCom Secretary-General James Njogu emphasised whole of society collaboration “No one sector can face this alone. Hate speech moves across boundaries. We must meet it with integrated intergenerational solutions that bridge education, tech and civic space.”

9/10 The Nairobi workshop wasn’t just a conversation. It marked the start of a regional roadmap. Countries will co-develop national strategies rooted in UNESCO’s education framework, ensuring Eastern Africa builds resilience through coordinated home grown action.
