Recent PhD grad, Chantal Rytz, tackles transgender cardiovascular health research through a year-long priority setting exercise. Alongside 50 stakeholders from across Canada, she uncovered top research priorities, including creating a safe healthcare system & clinician training.

In this invited editorial, Asa Radix, MD, PhD, FIDSA and I argue that #transgender patients deserve holistic care that includes and centers their perspectives and goals for their short and long term health and wellbeing.

This is based on the great qualitative work by Chantal L. Rytz, PhD MSc 👩🏼‍💻🔬🏥 et al. which interviewed #transgender patients on their perspective on hormone therapy and cardiovascular health. ahajournals.org/doi/abs/10.116…

Not surprisingly #transgender patients understood assn. between hormones and cardiovascular health but it was not a priority. What was most important was a holistic perspective of health, including physical and psychological wellbeing.

“Rather than focusing on potential, yet mostly unproven, negative assn. between GAHT & cardiovascular health, clinicians should incorporate these additional perspectives of gender-affirming care into their practice as part of shared decision-making & person-centered care.” END
