In August, Liz Truss was elected by a handful of the population – Conservative party members. But nobody knows exactly who these people are – or how secure the process is. So we asked the Conservative Party to tell us.

Your school French is more than another subject. It’s your springboard to a different world, your gateway to Spanish, Italian or Portuguese, the spark that lights up German, Chinese or Arabic, a new perspective on every other subject, a world of opportunities. Embrace humanity.

Not only is French your key to much of western Europe & several other continents, but also your introduction to Spanish, Romanian & Italian, your inspiration for German, Arabic, Mandarin or Korean, your respect for other cultures, beliefs & traditions, your rounded world view.

Writing a sentence in Chinese, reading a paragraph in Persian, exchanging a few words in Ukrainian, picking up Catalan or Dutch because you did French or German at school or understanding other people & ways of life. There's so much joy, fulfilment & achievement in languages.

There is no 'best' language to learn, no 'top 10' languages. French, German, Chinese, Persian, Latin, Japanese or Swahili - any new language expands your world, opens your mind & gives you unexpected opportunities. Whatever else you're good at, a language makes you even better.

Christopher Hughes MBE (@chrislinguist) 's Twitter Profile Photo

When you learn French at school, you're also learning openness, understanding, communication & empathy across the board. You're unlocking German & Spanish. You're ready to explore Chinese, Arabic, Ukrainian & Persian. You're embarking on a lifetime of discovery & enrichment.

Learning a language is an adventure full of triumphs & setbacks, like any adventure worth embarking on. The triumphs will spur you on & what you learn from the setbacks will make you even better. Whatever happens along the way, a new language is a huge adventure that never ends.

If your school offers a language, seize the opportunity. It's your ticket to a wider & more diverse world. It's an upgrade to whatever you're interested in. It unlocks other people, languages, music, food & cultures. It's the adventure that will take you in many new directions.

This cohort now facing not getting their degree on time and not having access to teacher training bursaries also saw their A-Levels cancelled, and their first years of university beset by lockdowns and online lessons 😔

Learn a language - any language - & you learn to understand, empathise & discover. You learn from your mistakes & are appreciated regardless. French, Sign Language, Esperanto, Hebrew, Latin or Urdu, there's no 'best' language. Every language is a new way to engage with the world.

Think of a language as something that enables & enhances other subjects. Business is better with German. Music sings with Italian. French elevates food. Latin lifts law & medicine. Geography & history come alive with Arabic & Chinese. Languages benefit everyone, linguist or not.

If you want to learn a new language & you know some French, try Romanian. Not only is Bucharest known as 'Little Paris', but Romanian words like om, creion, machiaj & sondaj are simpler spellings of the French words. What better way to celebrate Romanian on #RomanianLanguageDay!
