May have to get a little bit more into my January 1857 data if this pending winter storm proves what it will be for the eastern USA. In 1857, Virginia got hammered. glenallenweather.com/alink/01articl…

I had mentioned a series of cold air outbreaks, ice storms, and snow storms impacted the Southeast USA in January 1857. One of the ice storms impacted SW Arkansas (Washington) around January 7-10, as reflected from the record by Dr. Nathan Smith and a local newspaper. ARwx

Was looking at my notes on the January 1857 storm from a plantation diary in Tippah County, Mississippi (where they are in the path of an ice storm presently). Location about an hour from Memphis. Looks like in 1857, much more southerly penetration of the cold air and snow.

On January 20, 1857, after passage of a cold front and snow, Camden SC recorded a 7 AM temperature (likely not the exact daily low) of 0 F. #scwx

Portion of the Chapel Hill, NC record in January 1857, on this date, got down to 1 F at 7 AM. Paul Huff keyed in this data. I thought it would show colder numbers, but 7 AM is not necessarily the daily low. #ncwx

Forecast for Columbia, SC. In some research, I have looked at hourly "Snow rates". If this verifies, snow duration at least 12+ hours. A somewhat conservative 0.4 inches/hour is applied, at least 5 inches but if snow rates heavier than expected, could be up to 8 inches. #scwx

Was asked about old snow histories for Columbia, SC. I can say that Columbia had snow events of at least a few inches in the years 1849, 1851, 1853. 1855, 1856, and 1857 -- so within an 8-year timespan, snow occurred in 6 of them (1856 and 1857 had multiple snow days). #scwx

Never thought Salt Lake would lag behind Columbia, South Carolina in terms of snow. #utwx #scwx cowboystatedaily.com/2026/01/27/sal…

I found Mississippi plantation diaries online for the Terry Family, based at Salem MS, across the TN border east of Memphis. Grabbed the 1856, 1857 winter weather stuff. Pretty good. #mswx msgw.org/tippah/JTindex… msgw.org/tippah/TerryDi…

Suggested linkage between Avalanches and Climate Change. I would need to think more on that though. #cawx #avalanche scientificamerican.com/article/lake-t…

Was just looking at my 1862 California data on snow avalanche accidents. At least three to four people died from two accidents, and there is a third that reported at least eight people killed. I need to verify these a little bit more though. #avalanche #cawx

Have to look a little bit more into it, but it looks like a bunch of people killed near Sierra City, California in an avalanche in January 1890. #avalanche

Snow attention now on the occuring New England storm. I got some experience with old New England data. 1717 storms really stand out as the worst ever. I got a diary with zodiac symbols which I've never been able to fully interpret. #snow #newengland reddit.com/r/newengland/c…

Around January 17-19, 1857, A big snowstorm hit the eastern USA from South Carolina to Maine. A table below, notice the high amounts in Massachusetts and New York. #snowstorm #mawx #nywx

Looks like the current snowstorm at Providence RI shattered the January 18-19, 1857 snow amounts (1857 below). #snowstorm #riwx

Avalanche fatality map by state this year so far. Just thought I would mention that for 1862 for California, I have 13 fatalities. #avalanche #cawx
