I'm back from a week at my mom's house and now I'm getting ads for her toothpaste brand, the brand I've been putting in my mouth for a week. We never talked about this brand or googled it or anything like that. As a privacy tech worker, let me explain why this is happening. 🧵
More exciting #seagrass news- our paper led by Dr. Aurora M Ricart is out! Seagrass-driven changes in carbonate chemistry enhance oyster shell growth: bit.ly/2SwwHKo UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory w/ coauthors @Tessa_M_Hill & @priyology
It’s so frustrating that this is still considered a novel viewpoint. We need to accept that we are part of a complex & rich system (Earth), learn how it works, & re-build a civilisation that fits in with that system, instead of ignoring & destroying it. theguardian.com/world/2021/jun…
We’re so thrilled to announce that #PictureAScientist will be streaming on Netflix starting June 13. Mark your calendars! #WomenInScience #DiversityinSTEM with Ian Cheney @SharonShattuck1 Manette Pottle
Additionally, the Senate blockages make Biden’s unwillingness to act on student loan debt- something he can do *without* Congress but hasn’t yet- all the more glaring. #CancelStudentDebt is 1 of the few, rare opportunities Biden has to go big w/o the Senate. He needs to take it.
NY Times: How dry is the West? #climate scientist Dr. Daniel Swain: “It’s an alarming picture.” tinyurl.com/9yz7m8e8
Some people make it seem as if we’re not doing enough to stop the climate crisis. But that’s not true. Because to not do enough, you have to do something. And the truth is that we are basically not doing anything apart from “creative carbon accounting” and creating loopholes.1/2
What some call ”climate action” is actually outsourcing and excluding consumption, setting vague distant targets, burning biomass instead of fossil fuels and excluding the emissions, offsetting, switching from one disastrous energy source to a slightly less disastrous one etc.2/2
hot take: when was the last time a climate protest of any kind headlined the NY Times, completely dominated your timeline, disrupted exactly zero working class folks, did no damage — and explicitly named the fossil fuel industry? these protestors are brave. we need more of them.
