This day 49 years ago - 22 January 1972 - Jack Lynch and Patrick Hillery signed the Treaty of Accession, enabling Ireland to enter the European Economic Community. 83.1% of voters supported the move, which Lynch called “a great tribute to our people's innately sound judgement.”

Marking the 23rd anniversary of the Good Friday (Belfast) Agreement, the bedrock of peace, stability & prosperity for all in Northern Ireland. It took real courage & vision. The people of NI have come a long way. The EU remains a friend, devoted to protecting these achievements.

Máire Mhac an tSaoi was one of the first women recruited to the Irish diplomatic service. We remember as fine diplomat, a trailblazer Irish Foreign Ministry & an inspiration for generations of women who followed. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.

Terribly sad news about the passing of Irish Foreign Ministry Legal Adviser James Kingston James was a generous colleague & a gifted international lawyer. His sharp mind guided Irish foreign policy through the most complex legal issues imaginable. He will be missed by his many friends here🇺🇳
