We've got over 2,000 railway workers that we want to know more about and you can help! The catch? You've only got one day, and that's this Tuesday. #Transcription Tuesday blog.railwaymuseum.org.uk/can-you-help-o…

We also acquired some shoegear from York, which although it may not be for the 4DDs, we'd be grateful for any information about what stock it was from. Any suggestions welcome.

The kit from the NRM is now at Sellindge and on closer inspection we can see we have some brushgear from a large motor or generator as well as shoegear. Two old types of collector shoes are shown here if anyone can id them?

Thanks for the mention. After a bit of a break while some things were sorted within the group, we're now fundraising: justgiving.com/crowdfunding/c… Any donation, small or large appreciated, and plans for membership coming soon.

This photo was taken, we believe, at Lancing works; O.V.S. Bulleid + design team. Unit 4001was finished in September 1949, and 4002 the following month. The trailer bodies were on 62ft underframes, the motor coaches being 6in longer and all 9'2" wide. Each unit weighed 136 tons.

The 4DD's internal space constraints warranted an innovative lamp, which was a tubular incandescent lamp with side contacts. When we unearthed some at the Kent site we put one on test, and we're pleased to say it worked. Not used since 1971!

Another design feature required for the DD was pressure ventilation of the upper compartments. The top windows could not be opened, and with smoking allowed there would've been insufficient air movement. Here's a fan unit, still in-situ between lower compartments.

Fundraising going well, please help us to finally make some progress in restoring one coach from these oddities in British railway history. justgiving.com/crowdfunding/c…

A few pics which give a little insight into how the compartments were laid out. Not strictly double-decker but nonetheless a novel concept for the time by the imaginative Bulleid.

We have a mention in the Ashford Kentish Express. Nice to have some local publicity as the DDs served Kent towns, and we hope it brings out more memories of the units. (Slight error in the text: ownership is by all the 4DD committee members rather than only Mr & Mrs Chambers.)

The limited route which the DDs covered between 1964-71. At present the driving coach we have is limited to being static, so with any luck and a lot of support we may see it rolling again! If you could spare a quid or two it would help us reach £2,000! justgiving.com/crowdfunding/c…

Thanks to those who have donated, it's much appreciated and will go towards repairing bodywork issues such as this shown, as well as a whole range of other items. Extensive bodywork is required as you can see from the cab front.

A pic to show the task in hand concerning corrosion. To start repairs, we need to move the coach onto better track and under cover. In addition to well as the most-welcome funding, we are keen to speak to people who can help us achieve this, with equipment, materials and skills.
