Thanks for your work on this! I would also add that air cleaners purported to kill coronavirus really need critical assessment of manufacturer claims. Standards are week/nonexistent. Test reports plagued with weak science. Potential for chemical/particle byproducts is high.

Apoorva Mandavilli The questions I always ask about BPI are: 1. If they emit ions that destroy pathogens in the air, how do they not attack human lung tissue? and 2. What assurances are there that chemical reactions do not create byproducts and/or particles? Never received a good answer to either.

“Those of us in this field have been arguing for decades that we need to pay attention to the indoor environment, and we’re thrilled people are recognizing it’s important. But how to get from here to there will take an infusion of investment,” wired.com/story/the-next… via @wired

Great story w/ some great insights and quotes by Shelly Miller, PhD, Jeffrey Siegel, Bill Bahnfleth, Brent Stephens. My sense is that the general public is definitely cluing in to the importance of the air they breathe indoors. Leveraging now & post-pandemic is important.

Finally got around to updating our August blog post on masks a few hours before this update from CDC 🙃 built-envi.com/what-kind-of-m…. Need to update again (and again)

Surprisingly little experimental data out there on such a straightforward question: how much ventilation do you provide by opening windows in schools? Ian Cull made CO2 tracer test measurements in a local school (in winter, Chicago)

People are concerned about Bipolar Ionization devices producing ozone. You should be MORE worried by this new BERG@IIT study that found a unit not removing a statistically significant amount of particles! Isn't that a purpose of an "air cleaner"? sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Read our new paper testing a popular ionizer product here. In collaboration w/ great partners Delphine Farmer Elliott Gall Mohammad Heidarinejad and our teams. TLDR: not much particle removal, removal of some VOCs (but generation of others), and no NOx/O3 emissions. Hope the data are useful...

Wondering what that "99% reduction in 1 h" air cleaner is actually doing in your space? We made the air cleaner efficacy investigation tool (ACE IT) to help evaluate often opaque performance data. tinyurl.com/air-cleaner-ef… w/ BERG@IIT Mohammad Heidarinejad Delphine Farmer Marwa Zaatari

We tested a version of a Corsi-Rosenthal box with MERV 13 filters: built-envi.com/wp-content/upl… CADR intuitively increased with particle size: 166 CFM for 0.09-1 µm 321 CFM for 0.5-3 µm 464 CFM for 5-11 µm More air cleaner testing here: built-envi.com/portfolio/air-… Jim Rosenthal Richard Corsi, PhD, PE (Texas)

Finally, our first paper from a series of to-be-published papers related to the impacts of mechanical ventilation on the IAQ in residences is out and available in STOTEN sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Another round of tests published, this time on a WINIX 5500-2 unit. PlasmaWave(R) technology appears to generate large amounts of negative ions, as measured, but doesn't impact CADR much: built-envi.com/wp-content/upl…

Solid advertisement for building science here! Good time to bring up the James Brown blower door video courtesy of Energy Vanguard youtu.be/Xsp3yCxoYOA
