I feel like the longer I stay in academia, the more I see how it's tailored towards those who have a head start in understanding it. It's pretty wild actually.

🪰 perspective: -entire biomes never adequately surveyed -many spp need internal characters for ID -many have never been seen alive, only in lethal traps -most known from one life stage -no way to nonlethally sample DNA -many museum specimens small/old/slides. Collecting=research

My father told me his father was “denounced to the authorities” like this in Stalin’s USSR in 1948 … by a colleague who wanted my grandfather’s job. What a horror, this: washingtonpost.com/world/2023/05/…

We finally have a voice to advocate for the most unloved, but no less threatened creatures: parasites! They’re species rich, ecologically important, and many are hurtling towards extinction. There’s never been a better time to safeguard threatened parasites! @IUCNParasite

DYK: rickettsiae sensu lato in addition to being vectored by arthropods can cause food-borne disease (Potomac horse fever) but also can be vectored by parasitic worms! Just learned about the salmon poisoning disease (SPD) in dogs and it is mind blowing. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

A very important step in the OROV risk assessment! Bottom line: mosquitoes are unlikely to be involved in the virus transmission. Similar work in local Culicoides species is darely needed! wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/31…
