Finally got round to reading this, it’s brilliant - thanks #NinjaBookClub for the recommendation

I've heard things before about people who make up fictional languages for films (eg Avatar) and I always thought Why on earth would you bother? After listening to this I know why - it sounds so much fun.

⁦Caroline Crampton⁩ a recommendation, I don't think I've seen this podcast in The Listener feed and these two episodes are both brilliant.

Amazing to discover today a character even more vile than Mr Wilkins. Doctor Blaise says, "Do you know what it is never to have had any happiness?" and seems intent on making sure that everyone else is miserable too. (I know people like that!) #APStogether

"It seemed like some limitless being who, for a reason obscure, had taken on the flesh of a superannuated tea-drinking English paying guest." Oh good - I could do with some comic relief after the horrible Dr Blaise and the sad story of Mrs Trollope #APStogether

Unfortunately I'm in the wrong time zone to join the #apstogether discussion w Idra Novey, but a big thank you to apublicspace for choosing this book. I couldn't get through The Man Who Loved Children a few years back, so I wouldn't have picked this up, and I'd have missed out!

So much recognisable human nature - Sir W "the constant object of his [own] warmest respect and devotion", prepared to sacrifice "anything which he had not been very much tempted to do" for his daughters; the "kind friends" who reported Mr E's disrespectful words... #APStogether

If you were doing a Clueless-style modern retelling of Persuasion, you'd barely need to edit the scene where Anne warns her sister that her friend might be interested in their father (although Sir W might need to be rich or famous rather than eminent) #APStogether

Mary is really a mini-unreliable narrator - her soliloquies say so much more than the actual content #APStogether
