Bill Self has told this story many times, but it’s one of my favorites. In 2003, when Kansas offered Self the job, he called his dad about it and said he didn’t know what to do. His dad told him he should probably stay at Illinois. Bill asked him why he felt that way. (1/2)

His dad’s response: “Well if you’re that soft that you’re scared to follow Roy Williams, I think it’d be best if you stayed at Illinois.” Self told that story for the first time publicly at the 60 Years of Allen Fieldhouse celebration of 2014. What a fantastic line.

I may tweet disagreements about a personnel decision on occasion, but Kansas is so darn fortunate to have Bill Self as its coach. That comeback was as much coaching as execution. He’s simply extraordinary at what he does. What a special win for him - one he’ll always cherish.

You should always spend more time on recruiting than you think. If an employee works 2,000 hours a year and average tenure is 2 years- that's 4,000 hours of productivity. If instead of spending 2 hours recruiting you spend 10 hours and find someone 5% better, your ROI is 40X.

My family’s American dream started in a Clarksburg, WV coal mine, so this picture hits home. From what I’ve been told, after his shift, he raced to be with his son & watch our team. Don’t know who this is, but I have tickets for him & his family at Rupp to be treated as VIPs!!

One time as a young CEO: We couldn’t get a permit issued by a neighboring state regulator. Weeks went by with it sitting on some guy’s desk. Phone, faxes, zoom, etc. Nothing worked. I told the person in charge of our project: “Fly out there and sit in their office until

One piece of advice right now for anyone in college entering the workforce would be to get insanely good at using AI tools to get work done. You will look like a time traveler from the future to most companies, and likely can actually help the whole company modernize too.

Some of the biggest changes in how work will shift with AI will come from the next generation entering the workforce. This has also happened in prior technology waves, from the PC to the internet, where students in college often had access to new technology or developed new
