When it’s your birthday and you have the day off but you wanna be in the ED so you can just see your friends 😢

3rd surge arrival has me thinking Do I have resilience to absorb the volume of critically ill patients again? To code + pronounce pts younger than me? What does it say about me as an emergency doc if I can't do it? Even worse, what does it say about me as a human if I can?

This is the first step towards reclaiming what we’ve lost. The ED should be a haven, not a warzone or graveyard. Patients should feel safe here and my heart breaks when patients present in extremis because they come late and on the brink of death. Here’s to a glimmer of hope.

This away rotation is how a program I had zero connections to (as an NJ/NY native) became my dream program. Almost 3 years later, I cannot be happier that I applied. What I thought was just a honeymoon phase has become my daily reality and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
