WeathermanPoker 💯 one of the studies I cite in Thinking Sideways shows an inverse correlation between level of player and traded pieces! We all know this colloquially: the better you are the better you are at “holding the tension.”

I played a GM in round 1 of the STL Masters. And I won! The position was equal until he made a mistake in time trouble. Below he played Qg6+. This is bad because after Qg5 Qe4+ f3 Qxe3 I can trade queens with Qe5. Better was Qc6+ and after Kg1 Qf3 it's hard to evict the Q. 🙂

I just played another GM in round 2 of the Saint Louis Masters. We got a draw. But I was lucky. Below I played Qxc2. I calculated cxd4 Rxf6 gxf6 Qf5 Qxc3 Qxf6 and I thought I would have a perpetual, for example if Qxe1 then Qg5+ Kh8 Qf6+ etc.

I played a GM in round 3 of the Saint Louis Masters. I lost. Below I played Rc8. This is a mistake due to c5, and if I try to unpin with Qc6 then Bc4 is strong. White threatens Qxc6 Rxc6 Bb5. Instead maybe I should have played either Qa7 or Qc8, preempting white's c5.

I just played a GM in round 4 of the Saint Louis Masters. I lost. It's equal in the position below. However here I played Nd7, and this is a mistake. After Rhb1 he has queenside pressure. Instead I should have played Nxh5, but this only works because after g4 I have Nhf4!.

My favorite fact. If you have a 4-digit rating, you're unusually good and know a lot of fundamentals. By 1800, you are obsessed with a board game Another, below 1000, 1.e4 e5 is the main opening by far
