Can your 1st graders MAKE 10 all 3 ways? Every kid needs to Make 10 at least 1 way. No IFs, ANDs or BUTs! Our 5-step progression builds their skillset systematically & sensibly with 5 levels of abstraction. Advanced kids? Ask them for ALL 3 ways & to explain their thinking, too!

Most do not teach the third MAKE 10 strategy I showed today. But don't kids need to learn to break BOTH numbers apart? Isn't that the EXACT skill they need for double-digit addition? Programs show all the CRAZY strategies but not the ones kids actually need. Status quo? Say NO!

Trying out Greg Tang virtual manipulatives while solving comparing word problems. It was a huge success! They also love seeing their own names in these problems. Ravenwood Elementary #hadtodanceinmath

Nothing in math is more important than sense making. It is an invigorating, self-affirming, and creative process that is also messy, un-grade-able, and doesnโ€™t fit within our conventional units of school time (1 problem, 1 lesson, 1 unit, etc)

I got tons of them. Not random like the ones I see all over. Careful progression of key skills that build from K thru middle school so kids โ€“ with steady, strategic, systematic, sensible practice over long period of time โ€“ can solve hard problems mentally & without guess & check!

Thank you Greg Tang for todayโ€™s adding within 100 lesson. I heard 2 really encouraging things from my students during the lesson. โ€œMan, I thought this was going to be hard. This is easy.โ€ and โ€œCan we use our white boards as math tools? This will make the snake so easy!โ€

Education is not teacher centered or even student centered, but it is relationship centered. Teachers thrive w/ positive admin relationships & students thrive w/ positive teacher relationships. Relationships drive education.

In lieu of an โ€œicebreakerโ€ to launch the new school year..think about having each grade or team in your building have time to share, put their accomplishments together, share them with colleagues, students, parents and the community. Would celebrate teacher voice !
